Gwen's Grooming Routine: Elevate Your Grooming
I often get asked what products I use to make Gwen’s coat really shine and keep her looking her best year-round. A glossy, healthy coat isn’t just about looks—it’s a reflection of good care, proper nutrition, and a consistent grooming routine. If you want to bring out the dapples and achieve that show-stopping gleam, here’s my tried-and-true grooming process that works in every season.
This entire grooming routine takes about 30 minutes from start to finish—well worth it for a dappled, gleaming coat that turns heads!
Step 1 - Hands On Grooming Mitt
I prefer this over a traditional curry comb because it lifts stubborn dirt while providing a gentle massage. It brings grime to the surface efficiently, making the next steps even more effective.
Step 2: Rice Root Brush (Not For Sensitive Horses)
This is hands-down the best brush for removing deep-seated dirt and dust from the coat. Be sure to use a genuine rice root brush—imitations just don’t compare! If your horse has sensitive skin, opt for a softer alternative.
Step 3: Long Bristle Flick Brush
The key here is long bristles—they do the heavy lifting when it comes to flicking away the dirt brought up by the first two steps.
Step 4: Soft Brush (Medium Bristle Length)
This brush helps smooth the coat and pick up any remaining fine dust while adding shine.
Step 5: Betty’s Best Grooming Wipes XXL
I love using these oversized wipes to give a final polish. Start with the face and ears, then move over the entire body, finishing with the hoof walls for a complete, polished look.
Step 6: Healthy Hair Care Moisturizer
Hydration is key! I apply this liberally, beginning with the mane and tail using the Epona Queens Brush (an absolute favorite of mine). Then, I mist the entire body and buff it in with a clean, fluffy towel. Since Healthy Hair Care is a moisturizer, not a polish, it’s important to follow up with a finishing spray.
Step 7: Effol Coat Polish
For the final shine and dust repellency, I apply Effol Coat Polish. Using a separate towel, I lightly mist and buff the coat, then finish with the mane and tail for a sleek, dust-resistant finish.
Step 8: Hoof Care
No grooming session is complete without hoof care! Pick out the hooves and apply Effol Hoof Moisturizer 2-3 times per week to maintain strong, healthy hooves.
This entire grooming routine takes about 30 minutes from start to finish—well worth it for a dappled, gleaming coat that turns heads!
Give this routine a try, and let me know if you notice a difference in your horse’s coat. A little extra effort goes a long way in keeping them looking and feeling their best!
